Liverpool have reportedly been handed a huge transfer boost as AC Milan have made the decision to back out of the running to land Udinese’s Rodrigo de Paul.
According to Il Milanista, Milan chief Paulo Maldini was very interested in a deal for de Paul but has now been forced to withdraw his side from the race due to de Paul’s €40m price tag.
The report claims this has opened the door for Liverpool and Leeds to swoop in whilst the Italian clubs struggle to stump up the funds required.
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
Whilst the report states that the door has been left open for Liverpool, it remains to be seen if they will walk through it. Jurgen Klopp has already said that he does not expect many big deals to take place this summer due to the financial impact of Covid-19, which suggests that an expensive deal for de Paul may not be possible. However, it is impossible to judge – at this moment in time – whether or not Klopp would class a €40m deal in that bracket.
However, if Liverpool are seriously pursuing de Paul then Milan backing out of the race could be superb news for the club. For example, if de Paul is happy playing in the Serie A and settled in Italy then he may have preferred a transfer to Milan over Liverpool. This means that Liverpool could have a greater chance of being able to persuade him to join the club if there are no Italian clubs willing to pay the €40m price tag. Therefore, Milan could have handed Liverpool a huge boost.
