Kick-off at the San Siro was originally delayed by 25 minutes due to a torrential downpour which interrupted both teams’ pre-match warm-ups.

Stefano Pioli took the decision to hand Rafael Leão the captain’s armband for the game despite official skipper Simon Kjær named in the starting line-up.

The Portugal international repaid his manager’s faith by giving the Rossoneri an early lead with a surging run before sliding the ball home in the eighth minute.

Milan were largely untroubled by the visitors but failed to build on their slender advantage as they drew level on points with city rivals Inter, who play Sunday, at Serie A’s summit.
