The Neroverdi stunned Stefano Pioli’s side with two goals inside the opening 10 minutes, Andrea Pinamonti finishing brilliantly with a half-volley before Armand Laurienté streaked clear and put the ball past Marco Sportiello at the second attempt.

Milan soon pulled one back through Rafael Leão, who danced through the Sassuolo defence before slotting home.

The home side started the second half like they did the first, Laurienté netting again after 53 minutes with another fine strike from inside the box.

With Christian Pulisic rested ahead of the Europa League quarter-final second leg with Roma, Leão was the main source of inspiration for Milan. He played a huge role in Luka Jović’s strike just before the hour, his dangerous trivela cross falling to the striker who finished from close range.

Looking to move out of the relegation zone with a win, Sassuolo had their hearts broken in the 84th minute when Noah Okafor smashed home from six yards out after a corner fell to him.

The draw keeps Sassuolo second from the bottom but it could be a valuable point in the end, while Milan stay in second.
