Martínez double helps Inter overcome stubborn Cagliari

Scorers: Lykogiannis 54′; Darmian 25′, Martínez 51′, 84′

Inter had an early lead chalked off by VAR for handball as Cagliari tested Samir Handanović’s goal from range in the early exchanges.

Inter’s dominance paid off in the 25th-minute when Matteo Darmian rose highest to head home  Ivan Perišić’s cross.

Lautaro Martínez looked dangerous all game and was denied by a combination of heroic defending and the upright in the first half. However, after expertly beating the offside trap, the Argentina international got his goal in the 51st-minute.

To add to the tension of the evening Cagliari found themselves back in the game almost immediately from kick-off as Lykogiannis finished from close range.

A nervy phase ensued but, on the break, Roberto Gagliardini found an unmarked Martínez in the box who cooly chipped the ball beyond the onrushing Alessio Cragno.

This win sees the Scudetto race go down to the final day of the season as Inter trail their Milan rivals by two points. Cagliari defeat means they remain in the bottom three, two points from safety.

AC Milan beat Atalanta to close in on Scudetto

Scorers: Leão 56′, Hernández 75′

AC Milan’s win over Atalanta means if Inter don’t win at Cagliari later on Sunday, the Rossoneri will be crowned champions for the first time since 2011.

The deadlock was broken at San Siro early in the second half, when Rafael Leão used his pace to finish off a lightning counter-attack and put the hosts in front.

Theo Hernández then doubled their advantage with 15 minutes remaining with an outstanding solo effort which saw him run the length of the pitch from inside his own penalty area to score.

Stefano Pioli’s side will need to win at Sassuolo to confirm themselves as Serie A champions unless rival Inter fail to beat Sampdoria.
