Mikel Arteta is hoping for a positive reception from the Arsenal fans for Patrick Vieira, who will be in the opposition dugout on Monday.

In their first game back following the latest international break, Arsenal face Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium.

It’s a key fixture for a number of reasons, given Arsenal’s position in the table, the dropped points away to Brighton, the need to get on a winning run before the big-six away days in late November, but it’s also the return of Patrick Vieira Archives – Daily Cannon – Arsenal news and gossip to his old club.

Vieira is now managing Palace, so he’ll be taking charge of Arsenal’s opponents on the day. All the same, Mikel Arteta is hoping the Arsenal fans will give their former player a warm welcome back to North London.

“He is an Arsenal legend and I hope he gets the reception he deserves for what he did for the club, not only as a player but also what he transmitted as a person,” Arteta said.

“He was a captain of the club in the most successful era in the last many years and it is great to have him back.

“Recognising him the right manner, I think it’s really important and I’m sure that that will be the case.”

There seems little doubt about that. Arsenal fans have always fondly welcomed back members of that 2004 invincible team. Barring Ashley Cole, of course.

Of course, the fans will also be hoping for Vieira’s side to slip up on the day. But for the rest of the season, I think we all wish him well.
