Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that the club are “optimistic” about agreeing a contract extension with captain Martin Ødegaard.
Ødegaard’s current deal doesn’t expire until 2025 but talks have already begun over an extension, which could reportedly see him commit his future to the club for at least a further two seasons.
And speaking on Friday ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Everton this weekend, Arteta provided a positive update on the situation.
“He’s our captain, he’s a massive player for us. Really important for now and the future. We want to keep him here for a long time,” said Arteta.
“I’m always optimistic. We’re really close with him and his agent. Whenever that’s confirmed we will announce it.”
Ødegaard joined the Gunners from Real Madrid on an initial loan deal in January 2021, before the move was made permanent the following summer.
The 24-year-old Norwegian was handed the captain’s armband at the beginning of last season, and reports suggest he is set for a significant salary increase to reflect his improved standing since joining the club.
