Ashley had previously stated that he was looking for offers in the region of €420m.

A representative of Ashley described talks with Staveley as a “complete waste of time”, though the Newcastle owner has yet to find an alternative buyer.

However, the Shields Gazette understands that amid constant pressure that he is ready to consider offers in the region of €340m.

Newcastle fans have long been angry at Ashley’s lack of investment, which has led to two relegations in his 11 years at the helm.

Prior to the Magpies’ 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, there was a fan demonstration calling on him to sell the club outside the club shop at St. Jame’s Park.

Rafa Benítez has engaged in his own standoff with the owner, as he refused to sign a contract extension this summer.

Benítez wanted assurance that Ashley’s ambitions matched his own after the owner told the gaffer he would have to sell to buy any players in the summer window.
