Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre has spoken out ahead of his old side’s Premier League clash on Sunday against Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s Redmen will host arch-rivals United in a fierce match-up which has the potential to have major title implications.

The weekend’s standout fixture will undoubtedly be played out on Merseyside as both sides currently occupy second and first place in the league table.

United come into Sunday’s game three-points clear at the top of the table and will looking to extend their 11 domestic match unbeaten run.

Elsewhere, defending champions Liverpool will be desperate to bridge the gap on the Red Devils as they seek to lift their second Premier League title.

Ahead of Sunday’s mouth-watering encounter, former United defender Silvestre, who turned out for the Red Devils from 1999 to 2008, has urged his old side not to concede set-pieces.

Speaking to Ladbrokes, as quoted by MEN, the retired four-time Premier League winner said: “The margin will be very thin this weekend. It’s a game where Manchester United need to avoid giving free-kicks away. Don’t concede corners or soft free-kicks around the box.

“That would be my advice because I’d expect everything else to naturally be spot on with the guys.

“Luke Shaw has had a lot of time out through injury but when he has played he’s done very well. He’s been so solid and he’s brought some much-needed consistency.

“He’s getting better and better, and having been at United for a while now it’s good to see him playing a main role in the starting line-up. He’s showing Alex Telles, Brandon Williams and even Aaron Wan-Bissaka the way to play.

“When you play for Manchester United you need to be conscious that there will be competition for places from other international players and the demand and speed of the games means it’s normal to have another guy there to compete against and every day you have to do your best in training and prove why you deserve a place in the starting line-up.”

United have not won at Anfield since 2016 and will be hopeful they can break that streak as Klopp’s side fail to replicate their form from last campaign.

Liverpool are currently 27-points worse off at this stage compared to last season, whereas United are 11 better off.

It is generally accepted that Sunday’s match will be one of the best chances for the Red Devils to get one up on their bitter-rivals.

Should Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side come away with all three-points, not only will be they be six-points ahead of Liverpool, they’ll be odds on favourite to lift their first title since 2013.
