In a recent interview with ESPN, Miguel Layún explained his strong desire to make his América return.
The 32-year-old enjoyed a fruitful career in Europe at Watford, Porto, Sevilla, and Villarreal before coming back to Mexico, and it’s no secret that he cannot wait to put on the azulcrema shirt once again.
“I think no one imagined that I could return to América, especially at this stage of my life. I am enthusiastic and eager to arrive and compete.
“I also want to show that Miguel Layún is not over. I am going with every intention of closing my career at the top.
“Being a champion with the Eagles would mean more than I can tell you, when we go to Europe I spoke with my wife and told her that my dream is to return to América, but if I return it is to be champion.
“Once I get the title with América, then will I be able to think about my retirement.
“Working with Solari is something that motivates me. Working with people with the capacity and knowledge as he has is spectacular.
“Everyone talks about the fact that for Solari, the demand is maximum in each training session, that the position is won during the week’s work.
“That’s where I’m going to have to show that I want to be a star and can be.”
Layún also revealed that he sacrificed a significant portion of his salary to end his Rayados contract six months early in order to return to América.
“I was supposed to end my contract with Rayados in December and I terminated it, I gave up one hundred per cent of what I had to collect in Monterrey.
“I spoke with my agent and asked him to speak with people from América because they represent a lot to me.
“My agent told me that in the economic area they were not going to reach what I was making and I told him that money was not going to be an issue that was going to stop me from returning to America.
“I did not mind lowering my salary and putting on a salary that the club could pay.”
During the same interview, Layún also rejected the notion that he has personal issues with Memo Ochoa after he claimed he felt betrayed by those on the national team following Rayados’ victory over the Eagles in the 2019 Apertura final.
