After Friday’s friendly match in Los Angeles, where América lost 1-0 against Pumas, Layún approached the assistant referee to demand a certain standard of officiating.
According to Layún, team-mate Mario Osuna, and further reported on ESPN, the official allegedly responded: “I don’t speak Spanish, f**king Mexican.”
Layún vented his frustration on social media, stating: “I can tolerate everything, but not racism, the flag (assistant referee) had a deplorable attitude.”
The assistant referees for Friday’s match were Art Arustamyan and Matthew Seem. At the end of the encounter, Layún is seen arguing with Arustamyan, although it can be seen that the exchange goes beyond just a few words.
“I think there was a mishap with the referee,” Osuna told TUDN after the match. “Layún tried to discuss some things with him and the referee acted in a bad way with a half-racist comment.
“I’m not really sure what it was, Miguel was heated by that. They exchanged words and went after him.
“We tried to calm him down a little bit but it didn’t happen anymore after that, thank God.”
This is not the first altercation during a Liga MX friendly in the United States this week, as a Cruz Azul supporter ran onto the pitch and nearly struck a San Jose Earthquakes player.
There were several fights and even a shooting outside the stadium after the match, resulting in Chivas’ friendly against León in San Jose being postponed.
