Liga MX have had a number of notable European talents test themselves in Mexico’s top-flight in recent years and Luuk de Jong nearly became one of those players.

The Netherlands international, who now plays for Sevilla, was close to accepting a move to América from PSV but Miguel Herrera has now revealed the move fell through because the player to give Europe one last chance.

“The cost was not so high and the salary was not high at all. His salary was normal, within what is earned and it was not even close to being a salary that the best players in Liga MX have.

“Because of this, we said we are going to bring him to the club.

“He did not want to come, because he did not know. He wanted six more months (in Europe) and we couldn’t give him that, we had to decide.

“That is why he did not come to América, because he did not want to come. The conditions were very feasible.”

The 29-year-old made the switch from PSV to Sevilla last summer for €12.5m ($14.75m). The player has scored six goals and dished out three assists in 31 games in all competitions this season.
