Tigres UANL defeated Xolos 1-0 on Sunday at Estadio Universitario as a second half goal by  Raymundo Fulgencio led the home side to three points.

It was a much deserved victory for Tigres, seeing three goals ruled offside before finally obtaining the lead in the 77th minute. But celebrations were suddenly cut short as star Andre–Pierre Gignac was stretchered off the field with an ankle injury.

The player was unable to finish the match after central defender Nicolas Diaz clipped Gignac’s left ankle in an attempt to steal the ball. Gignac immediately went down, forcing Tigres staff to rush into the field for assistance.

Head Coach Miguel Herrera addressed the player’s situation after the match, confirming no preliminary diagnosis had been made.

"You have to wait until studies are done, it would be too hasty to say, but right now, as I see it, it's a very strong hit and let's just hope it passes,” he stated. "Right now it is not possible to know much, he is still on the stretcher, but it was a strong hit. It was an accidental play, but they kicked him.”

Any severe injury would come as a huge blow for Tigres UANL as they navigate through the 2022 Liga MX Apertura. Gignac stands as the team’s most pivotal player, earning the title after managing 167 goals and 41 assists in 294 overall games for Tigres.

While Herrera has other players to fall back on like Nicolás López and Jordy Caicedo, the team would likely suffer without the presence of Gignac.

And it doesn’t get easier for Tigres as they are set to host back-to-back league champions Atlas on Saturday at Estadio Universitario.
