In the first half of Club América’s 2-0 first-leg semi-final loss at Monarcas, Jorge Sánchez was sent off in controversial fashion after picking up his second yellow card.
While the second occurrence was a no-doubt yellow, many, including manager Miguel Herrera, believed that his first booking was very soft.
After the match, Herrera blasted referee Jorge Rojas.
“Analyze the expulsion, because I don’t see it as a bad play. The first yellow, he is wrong, he hits him on the hip and does not lift his foot.
“I did not understand the play. You have to be aware that we have to scratch them to be perfect.
“We have those oversights (by the referees) that have cost us in the tournament. The balls we had to put in, we didn’t put in.
“They are circumstances we’ve had to live with. Monarcas played very well, we did not have the ability to bend them, and they took advantage of our mistakes.
“It hurts us because we wanted to take some opportunities. Now we have to score some goals at home.”
The second leg will commence on Sunday.
