Portsmouth are interested in a reunion with Jamal Lowe at Fratton Park in the summer transfer window, after the midfielder departed the club in 2019 following two-and-a-half seasons with the club.

That is according to a report from TBR Football, who say the League One champions are among a number of second tier sides keen to sign the 29-year-old.

During his previous stint with Pompey, the versatile attacker went onto make 119 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring 29 goals and collecting 18 further assists to help them win the League Two title in 2017 and the EFL Trophy in 2019, before leaving for an undisclosed fee to then Championship side Wigan Athletic.

After leaving Portsmouth, Lowe had other spells in the Championship with Swansea City and Bournemouth, joining the latter in 2021. However, with the Cherries winning promotion the following campaign, Lowe was unable to establish himself for the club in the Premier League.

That has led to two loans back to the Championship, including a return to Swansea for the current campaign, and his availability this summer could mean another switch to a former side in Portsmouth.

Carlton Palmer's Jamal Lowe verdict

According to this latest update, a number of clubs are keen to sign Lowe in the summer, when he will be available on a free transfer as his Bournemouth contract expires. Portsmouth are said to be one of those sides who are keen on a move for the Jamaica international, although they will not be short of competition.

Ex-England international Carlton Palmer believes Pompey may have the edge over other rival clubs, though. Speaking exclusively to Football League World, he said: "Portsmouth have had a fantastic season.

"The runaway League One champions on 97 points have done really well, but plans for next season have begun.

"A couple of their forwards are on loan, with Abu Kamara returning to his parent club, Norwich City, for example. "In preparing for life in the Championship, they will need to replace players like that, and one player that is getting a lot of attention is Jamal Lowe, who's been on loan with Swansea. "He's done well and is going to be available on a free. He's 29-years-old, he's experienced, and he has also played for the club before. "He's no stranger to the club, but has been unable to step up to the Premier League and establish himself at Bournemouth. "Having said that, he would be a good signing for Portsmouth, because he is a very good performer at Championship level, and available on a free as well, which would make it good business. "But there are a lot of clubs who are looking at Lowe, probably due to, as I said, being 29 and an experienced Championship campaigner.

Jamal Lowe's summer decision

Portsmouth will need players with Championship experience and know-how, and those like Lowe on a free are ideal types of players for a side looking to quickly establish themselves in the second tier.

Not only that, but he has the versatility of being able to operate out wide or up front, as well as knowing the club well, which should help him to settle in.

However, there will be stiff competition for a player of his experience this summer, with a number of Championship sides needing added dept and quality to their forward line for as little cost as possible.
