Midfielder Katie Zelem says that she is proud of the Manchester United representatives in the current England squad.

Zelem is one of five Manchester United players to have been named in the England squad by head coach Sarina Wiegman for this month’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Latvia. The midfielder could make her debut for England at senior level in the current international window.

The England squad is usually very heavy on players from Manchester City but Zelem is pleased to see plenty of Manchester United representation this time around and she says that it is a sign of the club’s progression.

“I think it is a well-known thing that Manchester City have got some great English talent so no wonder there is always so many of their girls selected,” Zelem told FAWSL Full-Time.

“For myself and the (United) girls here, I am so proud of them and so proud of what Manchester United have achieved in being able to progress with the amount of players that they have got in the English squad. It’s five now, that’s such a great achievement.

“I am really happy for the girls.”

Saturday’s fixture against Northern Ireland is the first competitive England game to be played at Wembley and Zelem went on to say that the England squad are really excited for the occasion.

She said “It’s huge for us, it’s a huge stepping stone. You can see with the progression of women’s football what direction it is going in. For us, playing at Wembley in front of our friends, family and fans is incredible.

“We are all so excited for it, it is something that you dream of as a kid really and for it to be the first competitive game that we’ve played at Wembley makes it even more special for each and every one of us.”

The FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifier between England and Northern Ireland kicks-off at 5.15pm on Saturday evening. Tickets remain on general sale and are available here.
