Boro's former star has already brought in money for Michael Carrick's side since leaving the Riverside.
Middlesbrough will receive some financial benefits if Chelsea pull off a move for Aston Villa and former Boro star, Morgan Rogers.
It's only been roughly a season-and-a-half since Rogers left Teesside to go and prove himself at the Premier League level, which he has most certainly done, and he has already hit some of the targets which have activated some of the add-ons that were included in the deal that took him to Villa Park, like helping them qualify for the Champions League and being called up for the England first-team.
Villa signed him for £16 million in January 2024, handing Michael Carrick's side a £15 million profit on the player that they had only bought six months earlier, although 25 per cent of those profits went to his old club, Manchester City.
Now there's a chance that Rogers could be back playing for a 'Big Six' side; this time it's Chelsea.
According to The Independent, Chelsea are interested in signing the 22-year-old attacking midfielder this summer.
Should Enzo Maresca's side pull off this move, then Middlesbrough would receive a portion of the money paid by Chelsea due to the "very healthy" sell-on clause that they included in the Rogers deal 15 months ago, as per the Northern Echo.
It should be noted that the national outlet have stated that Unai Emery's side do not want to lose Rogers this summer, but problems with the Profit and Sustainability Rules, which may be worsened if Villa miss out on the Champions League spots this season, could force the West Midlands club into a "transfer churn."
If such a deal where Rogers left Villa Park this summer were to come to fruition, Boro would not owe Man City any of the money they received as part of the deal.
It might sound a bit ridiculous to say given the talents of the 22-year-old, but Chelsea do not need someone like Rogers. Put aside his brilliance for one second and just think about the composition of Maresca's squad: they have more attacking midfielders on their books than some clubs have midfielders in total.
They might look at Rogers and think that he is a star of the present and future that they would like to have, but why would Rogers leave Villa where he is essentially their main man to go to the overwhelming cluster of Cobham?
Boro aren't short on cash by any means, but they shouldn't be banking on any funds coming their way via Stamford Bridge.
