Middlesbrough are poised to make a renewed transfer approach for Leyton Orient youngster Daniel Nkrumah, according to the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (20/01/2023, 12:30pm).

The forward has been identified as a player who could potentially go into Boro’s under-21 squad before potentially making an impact in the first-team if he develops enough, with the Teessiders already making an initial offer.

That has been turned down though by League Two promotion hopefuls Orient, who appear resigned to still losing Nkrumah at the end of the season regardless with his contract set to expire.

19-year-old Nkrumah enjoyed a brief loan spell at National League South outfit Welling United in late 2022 and earlier this month, but he was recalled by Orient and named in their matchday squad for a goalless draw with Barrow last weekend.

True False

And he is set to be included once again by manager Richie Wellens for their top of the table clash away at Stevenage on Saturday afternoon despite the interest in his signature, with Boro’s Championship rivals West Brom also keen.

The Verdict

Boro seem very keen to land Nkrumah, and it’s now just a case of how much Orient can hold out for.

They will not be able to get anything significant for the forward due to his contract status, but a small fee plus a sell-on clause may do the job.

Nkrumah may never end up being Championship quality, but he already has some experience of League Two football and has enjoyed a fruitful spell out on loan – albeit in the sixth tier of English football – so you can see why Boro have taken an interest.

They have done well a couple of times out signing players over the years for their development squad who have then made it in the first-team – Isaiah Jones being the main one – and Nkrumah will no doubt be keen to emulate his particular path.
