Middlesbrough have parted ways with Garry Monk little more than six months after hiring him.
The news came after Boro’s come-from-behind win against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
The victory left them ninth in the Championship table and just three points off the promotion play-off places.
Monk joined the club in June after resigning from Leeds United.
Boro had been considered strong candidates for promotion earlier in the season and the club hierarchy clearly believe that is a realistic target.
Middlesbrough released a statement on their website thanking Monk for his service and explaining that academy manager Craig Liddle will take over on an interim basis.
Liddle will lead the side when they take on Bolton on Tuesday.
