Rohl is one of three finalists to replace Michael Carrick.
Middlesbrough have received a major boost in their potential pursuit of Danny Rohl as one other landing spot for him is now off the table.
After relieving Michael Carrick of his duties, following a post-season review of the footballing side of things on Teesside, Boro moved quickly and have got their options down to a final three. They are reported to be Rohl, Rob Edwards and Steve Cooper, as per the Northern Echo.
Edwards is said to be an option that Bristol City are looking at following the exit of Liam Manning, who joined Norwich City. The Welshman has been out of work since he was sacked by Luton Town in January, while his compatriot, Cooper, hasn't been managing since being sacked by Leicester City in November.
On the Rohl front, Boro's path has become a lot clearer. He was recently linked with Bundesliga side Wolfsburg by German outlet Kicker, but he is no longer an option for them following a decision to go with another candidate.
He had not long before made it abundantly clear that he would like to go back to the premier division of his home country, if possible. "If it were up to me, as soon as possible (to return to Germany)," the Wednesday boss told Bild. "The Bundesliga is obviously something special because I grew up with it. For me, it’s always about working at the highest level."
Go Ahead Eagles' manager Paul Simonis was the other option that Wolfsburg were reported to be interested in. Like with Rohl, they would need to pay a compensation fee to the Dutch side in order to get him, but that has not stopped them.
It was announced on Thursday that Simonis is the Wolves' new boss, eliminating the possibility of Rohl turning down Boro in favour of heading back to the European mainland.
Although the 36-year-old is down to the final three, it was initially stated by talkSPORT's Alex Crook, following Carrick's sacking, that the compensation fee required to get him out of Hillsborough was a potential problem for the Teessiders. It proved to be an issue for Southampton, too, who, instead, chose Will Still to be their next first-team leader.
Crook had previously stated, when the Saints were looking at Rohl as an option in December, before they decided to bring in Ivan Juric, that they would have had to pay £5 million to get the German from Wednesday. However, it was more recently stated that the release clause was at £4 million for Premier League clubs, and a bit lower for second tier teams, as per The Sun.
It has been made clear by Rohl that he does not want to manage another game with Wednesday. But he finds himself stuck in a hole that he dug because the one thing stopping him from leaving, his release clause, was part of the three-year contract that he agreed to last summer.
He is a fantastic manager, and would have already been snapped up by somebody had the hefty compensation fee not been in place. Boro won't have too much competition to get him, so for them, it's a case of whether they feel it's worth spending millions on bringing him in.
