The North East is truly one of English football's biggest hotbeds, with fans of clubs such as Sunderland, Newcastle and Middlesbrough as passionate about their team as they come.

Boro fans need only cast their minds to a little over a decade ago, and they'll remember the days in which Gordon Strachan was in charge, and the Riverside Stadium with its capacity of over 30,000, was often only a third full every week.

Now under the stewardship of Michael Carrick, Teesside is alive with enthusiasm and optimism that their club is heading in the right direction again, with Boro fans traveling the length and breadth of the country to follow their team in fantastic numbers.

But what about their home support? Where do their crowds rank among the rest of the Championship through the early stages of the 2024/25 season? Football League World investigates...

How Middlesbrough's average attendance stacks up with rest of Championship

The Championship is a league that is littered with big clubs and huge fanbases. In fact, over 12 million fans purchased tickets to second tier matches last season, the highest number for the league since records began over 130 years ago.

With the 2024/25 season set to be as popular as ever with supporters across the land, that age-old debate over which club has the best support will no doubt go back-and-forth throughout the season.

As per Transfermarkt, we've taken a look at the average attendance across the Championship so far this season, to see which clubs are among the most well-backed, and which teams perhaps haven't quite captured the imagination of their supporters yet.

Sitting bottom of the Championship with an average attendance of 11,368 is Oxford United, which is of course because of the size of the Kassam Stadium rather than a lack of support.

Bringing up the rear are Luton Town (11,777), Blackburn Rovers (14,769), QPR (15,285), Millwall (15,681) and Preston North End (16,597).

In the mid-table is where you can find the likes of Watford (18,789), Burnley (19,759), Portsmouth (20,262) and Hull City (21,011).

Middlesbrough, with an average attendance so far of 26,440.

Not quite cracking the top five, Middlesbrough fans are filling 78.4% of the Riverside Stadium per matchday on average, which is a highly respectable amount given the nature of ticket prices on Teesside.

In February, Middlesbrough announced their season ticket prices for the 2024/25 season as part of their 'early bird' scheme, with the reaction to the prices not going down well with the majority of supporters.

The most expensive adult season tickets are situated in the West Stand Upper, - Boro's largest and main stand - with the cost of watching Carrick's side from that vantage point setting you back £735.

Boro's second most expensive adult season ticket section is found in the stand directly opposite, in the East Stand Upper, with a season ticket here costing £690.

To sit in either one of the lower sections of both the East and West stands, that would see you parting with a cool £650.

Middlesbrough's lowest priced season ticket, £574, was still high enough to be crowned as the unfortunate winner of the most expensive-cheapest season ticket in the Championship this year, using figures from Birmingham World.

With individual adult ticket prices per game ranging from £30-38, for crowds at the Riverside Stadium to be averaging over 26,000, in one of the nation's most deprived areas, is very impressive indeed, and is a testament to how much their team means to the people in this part of the world.
