Michael Carrick’s side narrowly missed out on a play-off place last year despite making a difficult start to the campaign.

The Teesside outfit finished eighth in the table, four points away from sixth place Norwich City.

The 42-year-old managed Boro to a play-off place in his first term at the Riverside, but an underwhelming 12 months saw the team fall behind their rivals.

This summer represents an opportunity to catch back up to the likes of West Brom, Norwich City and Leeds United, as they all eye a promotion challenge in 2025.

Here we look at all the latest news surrounding Middlesbrough, with the transfer window now officially open…

Steve Gibson’s stance on Middlesbrough sales

It has been a busy start to the summer window for Middlesbrough, as they look to build a team capable of a top six push next year.

Michael Carrick has signed a new deal, an agreement has been reached with Columbus Crew to sign Aidan Morris and Delano Burgzorg has already joined the team.

However, according to The Northern Echo, the Boro chairman Steve Gibson is also optimistic that star players like Emmanuel Latte Lath, Hayden Hackney and Rav van den Berg will remain at the Riverside beyond the summer.

All three are attracting suitors this transfer window, but the Championship side will be hoping to keep them on board to sustain that promotion challenge.

It is understood that it will take a very big offer to convince Boro to cash in on Latte Lath after his positive end to the campaign, while the club is hopeful of keeping van den Berg for at least one more year.

Hackney’s injury-hit campaign has also seen interest in him wane, amid speculation surrounding Liverpool and Tottenham.

Matthew Hoppe’s Middlesbrough future

One player that is expected to depart Middlesbrough this summer is forward Matthew Hoppe.

According to The Northern Echo, the striker is not part of the club’s first team plans for next season.

Hoppe has returned to the Riverside following a loan spell in the US with San Jose Earthquakes, having struggled for game time under Carrick.

With Burgzorg now in the squad, Hoppe has fallen even further down the pecking order of the Teesside outfit.

This means that Boro are open to a permanent sale this summer, with his contract set to expire in 2026.

According to The Northern Echo, Middlesbrough are searching for another forward addition to the squad.

However, it is believed that a pursuit will not be made for ex-loanee Cameron Archer following his return to Aston Villa from Sheffield United.

Another striker is being targeted, as well as a versatile forward, in a bid to strengthen Carrick’s attacking options.

While Archer performed well for Boro during his loan spell with the club in 2023, it is understood that a proposal to re-sign him is not being considered due to it not being a realistic option.

But the club is open to looking at the loan market for potential improvements, as they look to add competition to Latte Lath and Josh Coburn up front.
