Two-goal hero Michael praised the mentality of his Flamengo team-mates after a weakened side claimed a significant victory at Palmeiras on Sunday.

Wesley gave the hosts the lad on the quarter-hour at Allianz Parque, but Michael equalised just two minutes by sending a powerful downward header past goalkeeper Wéverton.

Another superb header from Pedro put the Rubro-Negro in front just before the hour mark, and Michael wrapped up the points late on when he danced through the Palestra’s defence before lashing home.

“Thank God we have a good group. There were many injuries, but that shows the strength of our group,” Michael said afterwards.

“We work every day, those who join or stay at the bank work so that, when they have the opportunity, they can be the best in the game or do their best to help the team.”

The win leaves Flamengo in third place in the Brasileirão, eight points off leaders Atlético Mineiro but with two games in hand.

Next up for the Mengão is the second leg of their Copa do Brasil quarter-final against Grêmio at the Maracanã on Wednesday.

They will be heavy favourites to progress to the last four given that they enjoy a 4-0 advantage from the first leg.
