Michael Stewart can shut up about Rangers’ Cyriel Dessers

Article image:Michael Stewart can shut up about Rangers’ Cyriel Dessers

With Rangers’ dear friend Michael Stewart on Sportscene sitting next to true Rangers hero Ryan Jack and sheepishly spouting off about Cyriel Dessers, we thought we’d take the Rangers trialist failure’s views and knock them out of the park, frankly.

He’s not the only one to whine about Dessers ‘not taking chances’ and still seems to be making that complaint, so let’s have a look how Dessers compared last season, and this:

OneFootball Videos

Total shots:

Lawrence Shankland: 136

Matt O’Riley: 109

Bojan Miovski:104

Cyriel Dessers: 103 FOURTH

Kyogo Furihashi: 101

Shots on target:

Shankland: 50

Dessers: 49 SECOND

Miovski 44

O’Riley: 43

Shots off target:

Shankland: 50

Miovski: 40

Sima: 37

Kyogo: 32

Vassel: 32

Tav: 31

Dessers: 31 SIXTH

Big chances missed:

Dessers: 27 FIRST (unfortunately)

Kyogo: 24

Miovski: 16

Maeda: 12

Goal conversion rate:

Now this is more complex. A defender who scored one penalty is 100%. So we are eliminating all non-strikers, and only those with a substantial number of shots (over 50):

Blair: 20.55%

Shankland: 17.65%

Murray: 17.07%

Watkins: 16.67%

Dessers: 15.53% FIFTH

This season:

Dessers is joint-top with 3 goals. Big chances missed he’s second with 3. Total shots he’s 4th with 10. Goal conversion he’s at 30% and is 12th. Shots on target he’s joint second with 5.

In other words Dessers is a lot more clinical this season than he was last season, and last season he was a tonne, a TONNE better than he was ever given credit for.

He was more efficient than Shankland and Miovski overall, and the only thing he fell a little shorter on was outright league goals and he wasted more ‘big chances’.

He’s currently fixing that to a great degree.

Long story short, the notion that Stewart or anyone else can whine at Dessers for being wasteful or not scoring enough, when Shankland and Miovski were a lot worse for both or not that much better, is just clutching at straws for something to criticise the guy with.

Rangers fans now appreciate the boy much more than they did, and he’s become a cult hero. Hopefully he sustains his form and becomes the alpha striker Rangers supporters are beginning to see him as.
