UEFA have announced that Michael Oliver will be the man in the middle of the park for Friday’s mouth-watering Euro 2024 quarter-final between Portugal and France. The English referee will kick off proceedings between the Seleçao and Les Bleus at Hamburg’s Volkparkstadion, this Friday at 9pm CET. Michael Oliver’s fellow countryman – Anthony Taylor – will take charge of the first quarter-final between hosts Germany and the tournament’s free-scoring favorites, Spain. Two out of those four countries will face off in next Tuesday’s semi-final at Munich.

The 39-year-old Michael Oliver has never officiated an international game in which France featured. The Ashington-born ref last officiated in a game featuring Portugal in 2022, during a UEFA Nations League group phase match between the Seleçao and Spain. Michael Oliver has officiated in three games so far at the Euros. It was he who decided to interrupt the last-16 game between Denmark and Germany due to the severe thunderstorms brewing over Dortmund last Saturday.
