Manchester United fans could certainly do with some good news at the moment after a miserable season has left them with no hope of qualifying for the Champions League and only the FA Cup to play for.

The last time United won that trophy was under Louis van Gaal in 2015/16, when a Jesse Lingard winner in extra time was enough to see off Crystal Palace.

Looking forward to next season, Palace’s loss could be United’s gain again if the latter are successful in bagging one of the Eagles’ top stars, Michael Olise.

Rumours have been circulating for some time now that the 22 year old was high on United’s list of transfer priorities for the summer.

However, recent reports have added to the Old Trafford gloom, claiming that Olise only wants to move to a Champions League team, effectively ruling out an Old Trafford switch.

It seemed like that meant it was back to the drawing board for Erik ten Hag until a new report this morning paints a much rosier picture.

According to transfer expert Ben Jacobs via Give Me Sport, Olise is “open” to joining the Red Devils after all.

Moreover, Jacobs claims that United’s part owners, INEOS, have already given the green light for the transfer to happen.

“I think that Michael Olise is open to Manchester United,” Jacobs says.

“Although other targets are still being determined because this INEOS-led sporting department is new, Olise is the one name that was pre-approved.

“Even in January, when the transition was still taking place, Olise was being spoken of by the new regime and was actually put on a provisional list of potential targets by the old regime.

“There has always been a consensus at Manchester United that Olise is a name they like.”

What remains something of a mystery is the exact value of the release clause for the man with dual English and French nationality.

Whilst it seems generally agreed in the media that such a clause exists, figures quoted vary from as little as £35 million to as much as £60 million.

INEOS would surely jump at the lower figure, but given Olise’s injury record, a £60 million figure would more likely give them pause.
