It may not be over the line just yet, after all Celtic will still have to negotiate the structure of the fee with the hard-nosed Daniel Levy at Spurs, but the news Lubo98 brought us on The Celtic Star last night, that Cameron Carter-Vickers had agreed personal terms with Celtic, means it now appears the player has committed to the club and the ball is now in the court of Michael Nicholson to get this deal over the line.

Carter-Vickers has been an excellent temporary signing and shows the loan market, where Celtic can try before they buy, is certainly one worth utilising going forward. The question of loan players and their willingness to commit fully to the cause is always an argument with merit, yet in the case of Carter-Vickers, Celtic had a season of a player, who appeared from the outside looking in, to be the consummate professional as well as a damn fine defender, and one it must be said where time and games will see even further improvement, there is little doubt of that.

Carter-Vickers reading of the game is first class, his positioning exceptional and his ceiling is far from been reached, indeed he’s even popped up with a few important goals, as theRangers could testify too having been on the end of one at Ibrox. And Carter-Vickers four goals in the Hoops is one more than the darling of the Ibrox stands – you know the guy they sing about ripping us apart again? Not bad for a centre half!

This deal of course could end up being pricey, with rumours of £6m apparently being the starting point for a fee that could well see Spurs rake in as much as £10m. Yet in today’s market that’s at the very least a fair price for a defender we now know cuts the mustard on the field and apparently has a spot-on attitude off it. And at 24 years of age and with a career on an upward trajectory, Michael Nicholson and the Celtic board can sign off on this deal knowing fine well the chances are, further down the line, a sale of someone of Cameron Carter-Vickers’ untapped potential is likely to make the initial outlay seem more than reasonable in the long-run.

This signing is also a sign that Celtic can match the ambitions of young players with big aspirations in the game, after all Carter-Vickers is not without alternative options and most are in the playground of the rich, even when not quite so famous, of the EPL.

Yet Carter-Vickers knows he’s at a club who next season will be playing Champions’ League Group stage football. In the whole of the UK there are only a maximum of six clubs who are likely to be able to offer that kind of platform. And for a player who certainly harbours international ambitions, having returned to the USA squad after a three-year hiatus on the back of exceptional performances in a Celtic shirt, it is clear, be it Carter-Vickers or future talents the club choose to target, that the evidence is there, be it at club or international level, the ambitions and level of competition a player requires to be satisfied in his place of work can all be met by playing with Celtic.

It’s now over to Michael Nicholson to conclude this deal with Spurs and we are confident that he will do just that. With a 15 June deadline apparently being the cut-off, time is of the essence, yet if this deal as we believe has an option to buy included then much of the negotiations must already have been in place, and hopefully only the structure needs to be agreed. Not that any of that will be simplistic when dealing with Daniel Levy, and after this one is complete, you’d have to say Nicholson will have earned his spurs, after all it’s unlikely the Celtic CEO will face a tougher negotiator all summer long.

Yet the hardest part of this deal is surely concluded, the part where personal terms with a player targeted by the likes of big-spending Newcastle United, have been agreed. And it’s that willingness to sign on at Celtic that shows the club will be getting a player in Carter-Vickers who we’ve not only established is a fine acquisition, but one who is also invested in Celtic for the long haul.

Next up, Jota…watch this space.
