Walton is a product of the Barnsley youth academy and has made 62 first-team appearances in all competitions for the Yorkshire club since breaking through.

However, this season the 24-year-old has been second choice behind Brad Collins and it now seems as though he could be on the move in the final days of the January transfer window.

Now Duff has revealed that Walton is likely to swap with Luton’s Harry Isted, with both joining the respective club’s on loan according to journalist Doug O’Kane.

While the Tykes have also been linked with moves for Tom Hamer and Oli Shaw, however when speaking to Doug O’Kane, Duff declined to comment on them links.

Meanwhile, speaking in the press conference ahead of their game against Oxford United, Duff confirmed that the club would be looking to sign a new midfielder this month, after the news that Matty Woolfe is expected to be out for the season.

Doug O’Kane wrote on Twitter: “Michael Duff confirmed the Reds would look for a new central midfielder after Woolfe injury. Wouldn’t comment on Oli Shaw and Tom Hamer. Said Jack Walton and Luton’s Harry Isted likely to swap but not definite. Also said no bids for players and not expecting to lose anyone.”

The Verdict

It looks as though Walton will be heading out the exit door at Oakwell with all things going well, but it seems Isted moving the opposite way will play a part in whether the deal goes through or not.

While, their injury setback with Woolfe has probably the changed the plans going forward for Barnsley, as they probably didn’t anticipate having to go into the market for a new midfielder.

While in terms of incomings, in particular Hamer and Shaw, Duff seems to be keeping it close to his chest. Both players have been heavily touted for a move to Oakwell in recent days, and it seems if these deals are to get done, they may go into the final hours of deadline day.
