Bayern Munich legend Michael Ballack believes the club are in the perfect position to beat Chelsea in the upcoming UEFA Champions League last-16 clash.

Ballack’s two former clubs meet at Stamford Bridge on February 25, with the second leg taking place at the Allianz Arena on March 18.

After a poor start to the season which lead to the dismissal of former head coach Niko Kovac, Bayern have found a new lease of life under Hansi Flick and have bounced their way back to the top of the Bundesliga.

The Bavarians are on a run of seven games unbeaten, while Chelsea have been in and out of form all season, although still find themselves in the top four in the Premier League, two points ahead of fifth-placed Sheffield United.

However, Ballack believes the German side have the best chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.

Speaking to Goal, the 43-year old said: “Bayern are favourites, for many reasons.

“Experience speaks strongly in their favour. Chelsea’s manager is new and inexperienced in his job, and that is a big advantage for Bayern.

“The performance levels of Bayern’s players are another plus for them.

They are more stable than they were last autumn.”

Ballack won three league titles during his time at Bayern, while winning the Premier League and two FA Cups while plying his trade at Stamford Bridge.
