Pundit Micah Richards covered Liverpool’s opening Champions League group stage clash against AC Milan at Anfield earlier this week.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp decided to rest centre-back Virgil van Dijk against the Serie A side. The Dutchman was named on the bench after starting in the Reds’ opening four 2021-22 Premier League fixtures.
Joel Matip started alongside Joe Gomez in the heart of Liverpool’s defence against AC Milan.
However, Richards was not impressed with the duo on Wednesday night.
“For the defending, I thought Gomez and Matip, they didn’t have the greatest of games,” Richards told Paramount+ on CBS Sports (15/09/21 at 10:10 pm).
“But let’s not take anything away from that finish (AC Milan’s first goal).”
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
We do agree with Richards’ comments.
Liverpool defeated AC Milan 3-2, which does highlight that the Reds were a bit shaky at the back.
Matip and Van Dijk were Liverpool’s centre-back pairing for the opening four games of the 2021-22 Premier League season.
Therefore, before the clash against AC Milan, Matip and Gomez had not played alongside each other in the early parts of the new campaign.
With that being the case, we weren’t surprised that the Reds were a little bit shaky at the back against the Italian-based club.
