Speaking after Mexico’s failure to make the last 16 at the World Cup, having done so for at every edition of the tournament since 1986, Mexican midfielder Edson Álvarez apologised to fans for the team’s performance. Speaking with Mexican broadcaster TUDN after the 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia, which wasn’t enough to beat Poland to second place in Group C, the Ajax player said:

“I’m only really here [for the interview] because I have to be. The exit is a big blow, there are no words to describe it, the team went looking for the result from minute one and we had the opportunities to score the goals but, unfortunately, we couldn’t make it happen, it leaves a bitter taste but you have to face up to it… We can only apologizing to the fans and thank them because the fact that they come all this way is incredible. We really feel their support. Now it’s time to assess ourselves to see what we’re doing wrong, not only on the pitch.”
