The Mexico national team have parted company with coach Jaime ‘Jimmy’ Lozano after they went out at the Group Stage of this year’s Copa América.

A statement released by the FMF late on Tuesday said that Lozano turned down the offer of a demotion to stay on the staff of a new head coach, and will instead leave his post entirely.

“Jaime Lozano was offered, along with his coaching staff, a contract until 2030, in which during 2024-2026 they will accompany a more experienced head coach towards our World Cup, and later it would be Jaime himself who would retake the reins of head coach in the 2026-2030 process,” the FMF said.

“After analyzing the proposal, Jaime Lozano informed us that he doesn’t wish to continue. We respect his decision.”

The FMF are reportedly aiming to hire Lozano’s replacement by the first week of August, with talks said to be taking place this week with Javier Aguirre over stepping in as national team coach for a third time.

Lozano was initially hired on an interim basis last June, before landing the role permanently after El Tri won the 2023 Gold Cup.

But their performance at this summer’s Copa América ultimately cost him his job, with Lozano’s side finishing third in Group B and scoring just one goal at the tournament.
