Mexico legend Tomas Boy dead at 70 | OneFootball

This Tuesday, March 8, 2022, Tomas Boy, who had an extensive playing and managerial career in the Liga MX died at the age of 70. Several media outlets had confirmed the news, but the cause of death is not confirmed.

However, on Monday night it was revealed that Boy had been hospitalized due to a pulmonary embolism.

Tomas Boy began his playing career in 1971 with Atletico Espanol then went on to play with Atletico Potosino in 1974. “El Jefe” moved to Tigres UANL in 1975, which was a pivotal move in his playing career.

Boy became a club legend for Tigres as he played over 400 games with the Monterrey side from 1975 to 1988. His career highlights at Tigres were two league championships in the 1977-78 and 1981-82 seasons.

Tomas Boy also had a spectacular playing career with the Mexican national team, gaining 52 caps and captaining El Tri in the 1986 FIFA World Cup. The elegant midfielder retired from the national team in 1987 and received a commemorative retirement game.

The Mexican playmaker retired as a player-manager in 1988 with the San Jose Earthquakes in the United States. Boy then had an extensive managerial career taking charge of Tampico Madero, Queretaro, Veracruz, Morelia, Monterrey, Puebla, Atlas, Cruz Azul, Chivas and Mazatlan.

One of Boy’s greatest managerial feats came at Monarcas Morelia, where he led the team from Michoacan to the 2011 Clausura final. At Atlas, Tomas Boy also had a successful stint as he saved Los Zorros from relegation and led them to the Copa Libertadores.

The Tigres and Mexico legend will also be remembered for his colorful personality as he was not afraid to speak his mind as a player, manager and TV personality.
