Mexico started their Concacaf Nations League group stage with a comfortable win over Suriname on Saturday.

Scorers: Reyes 3′, Martín 40′ (pen), É Sánchez 90+4′

The hosts hit the front inside the opening three minutes at the Estadio Corona when Israel Reyes swivelled and shot low and hard to the net after Suriname had failed to clear Luis Chávez’s corner.

And the largely second-string El Tri line-up doubled their lead before the interval when Henry Martín converted from the spot after Diego Lainez had been felled in the area.

There was some late drama when Arsenal teenager Marcelo Flores was afforded the opportunity to score just moments after coming on for just his second senior international appearance.

However the 18-year-old was unable to score from the spot, with goalkeeper Warner Hahn making amends by producing a brilliant save after he had clipped Orbelín Pineda to concede the penalty.

A third goal did come in the closing stages, with substitute Érick Sánchez finding the target with virtually the last kick of the game.

Mexico will play their second game in Group A when they travel to face Jamaica in Kingston on Tuesday.
