Despite a fierce El Salvador crowd, Mexico were able to withstand their pressure and take all three points courtesy of a goal from Héctor Moreno.

After a tense half-hour of play, Moreno rose up to head home a nicely-delivered corner from Jesús Corona to give Mexico the early lead.

Shortly after the break, El Salvador’s situation became much more difficult as Mario Jacobo was sent off for pulling down Rogelio Funes Mori after he broke past the defence.

However, the hosts were handed new life in the 67th minute when Néstor Araujo was sent off for a rather unnecessary second yellow.

Though it was a tense last 25 minutes, Raúl Jiménez would seal the victory with a late penalty and give Mexico all three points, sending them back to the top of the Octagonal.

As for El Salvador, not getting a result tonight means their hopes to qualify for Qatar took a massive blow as they miss out on a chance to move up the table and remain on just five points through six games.
