MIAMI — The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup continues with Mexico and Suriname meeting in Group A on Wednesday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The two nations are facing off for the first time at the Gold Cup. Mexico won the two most recent meetings, when the two nations squared off in League A of the 2022/23 Concacaf Nations League.
Mexico aiming for second victory
Mexico won 3-2 against the Dominican Republic in the opening match of the tournament on Saturday. Edson Álvarez, Raúl Jiménez, and César Montes scored for El Tricolor to deliver the win.
Luis Ángel Malagón also stood out with three saves to preserve the victory.
With three points in hand, the reigning champions will seek to inch closer to a place in the Knockout Round.
Suriname seeks first win
Suriname will look to bounce back after a 4-3 defeat against Costa Rica on Sunday. The Caribbean nation had built a comeback effort but conceded a penalty in the closing moments.
Gyrano Kerk and Richonell Margaret combined to deliver the first two goals for Suriname. Josimar Alcócer delivered the third Suriname goal in the team’s opening match.
Suriname is seeking its first victory of the campaign and second overall at the Gold Cup.
All-Time series Mexico v. Suriname –
Mexico and Suriname are set to meet for the very first time in the Concacaf Gold Cup, but the two sides do share a bit of history across other official competitions.
Their rivalry includes three official meetings — one in FIFA World Cup Qualifying and two more recent clashes in the Concacaf Nations League.
Their first encounter came during the qualifiers for Argentina 1978, where Mexico delivered an 8-1 rout at Estadio Universitario in Monterrey on October 15, 1977. El Tri dominated the scoreboard with goals from Víctor Rangel (24'), Raúl Isiordia (37', 49'), Hugo Sánchez (39', 90'), Alfredo “el alacrán” Jiménez (73', 84'), and Rafael “chepa” Chávez (80'). Remie Jacques Olmberg converted a 23rd-minute penalty for Suriname’s only goal.
Fast forward to the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League campaign, Mexico again proved too strong:
- On June 11, 2022, at Estadio Nuevo Corona, El Tri blanked Suriname 3-0 thanks to goals from Israel Reyes (3'), Henry Martín (40' penalty), and Érick Sánchez (90').
- On March 23, 2023, at Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo, Mexico posted a 2-0 road win, with Johan Vásquez scoring in the 64th minute and an own goal by Damil Dankerlui in the 82nd sealing the result.
