Ecuador thought they had scored five minutes before the break only to see Romario Ibarra’s close-range effort somehow turned round the post by a brilliant Guillermo Ochoa save.

It may have been only a friendly, but you would have struggled to tell that at times.

The game became increasingly fractious after the break, and an unnecessarily aggressive tackle by Ecuador midfielder Moisés Caicedo on the hour mark saw tempers spill over.

Mexico were furious 12 minutes from time when they were denied a penalty despite an extremely clumsy challenge by Pervis Estupiñån on Uriel Antuna inside the area.

Unfortunately play was briefly suspended shortly afterwards, as per Fifa protocol, due to discriminatory chanting coming from the stands at Soldier Field.
