Mesut Özil has revealed why he doesn’t sing the German national anthem before every match after facing more media backlash.
Özil is already under fire for his inconsistent international performances and is making headlines again after deciding not to chant with his teammates.
However, the 29-year-old has come out in defence of his actions and claims that he should not be analysed to such minimal detail every 90 minutes.
“While the anthem is being played, I pray, and I am sure that this will give us strength and confidence to drive the victory home,” Özil told Mission Titel.
“I think it’s a pity if I or a teammate is convicted – because I’m sure people do not know why everyone does not sing along loudly.”
Özil has also been in public focus since a joint photo with Ilkay Gündogan and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a few weeks ago, but has since refused to comment.
