Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have experienced contrasting starts to spells with their new clubs so far this season.

Ronaldo has scored four goals in three matches for Manchester United following his shock return to Old Trafford in the summer.

The 36-year-old netted a brace on his second debut for the Red Devils against Newcastle and then scored United’s goal in a 2-1 defeat to Young Boys.

Ronaldo made it four goals in three games by netting the equalising goal against West Ham on Sunday. Man Utd went on to win the match 2-1 and remain joint-top of the Premier League table as a result.

Messi, on the other hand, has failed to hit the ground running at PSG following his abrupt departure from Barcelona.

The 34-year-old made his debut in a 2-0 win against Reims as a second-half substitute and then played the full 90 minutes as PSG were held to a 1-1 draw away at Club Brugge in the Champions League.

He made his home debut against Lyon on Sunday and went agonisingly close to opening his account for PSG with a brilliant 30-yard free-kick that hit the bar.

But he also missed a brilliant chance to score midway through the first half after being put through on goal by Neymar and was subbed off with 15 minutes remaining by Mauricio Pochettino.

but Pochettino’s decision was vindicated when substitute Mauro Icardi scored the winner with virtually the last touch of the game.

Ferguson's opinion on the Messi vs Ronaldo debate

Following the Argentine superstar’s latest underwhelming performance PSG, a clip of Sir Alex Ferguson expressing his personal opinion on the age-old Messi vs Ronaldo debate from 2015 is being shared on social media.

Speaking to snooker legend John Parrott, Ferguson said Messi was a Barcelona player, whereas Ronaldo is capable of scoring goals for any team in the world.

“People say who is the best player in the world? And plenty of people quite rightly say Messi - you can’t dispute that opinion,” Ferguson said in April 2015.

“But Ronaldo could play for Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Doncaster Rovers… anyone, and score a hat-trick in a game.

“I’m not sure Messi could do it.

“Ronaldo’s got two feet, he’s quick, great in the air, he’s brave - Messi’s brave, of course.

“I think Messi’s a Barcelona player.”

Now let’s check out some of the reaction from fans:

It's still early in the season

Of course, it must be noted that it’s still so early in the season.

There’s every chance that things will click for Messi, who is still expected to win a record-breaking seventh Ballon d’Or award later this year.

Similarly, there’s every chance that Ronaldo and United will end the season empty-handed.

But as things stand, it’s Cristiano who has enjoyed the far better start to the season out of the two footballing legends.
