As many expected, FC Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski claimed The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2020 award. The Polish striker won every possible trophy with Bayern this year and finished as the leading goal-scorer in UEFA Champions League and Bundesliga play.
Players, managers, media and fans all had a say in the final vote for the award. For the player’s portion of the award, captains from national teams were designated to vote for the top three. Many voted for Robert Lewandowski to win the award, but Argentina team captain Lionel Messi did not.
The Barcelona star voted (via FIFA) for Paris Saint-Germain stars Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in the top two.
It is not a surprise to see Messi vote for Neymar to win the prestigious award. Neymar helped lead PSG to a domestic-treble-winning season and an appearance in the Champions League final. And of course, the two are good friends from their time as teammates during their four seasons at the Catalan club.
Messi is surely becoming a fan of Mbappe. He also voted for the French forward in the top three for The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2018 award.
For Neymar, Messi was not the only player to vote for him to claim the award. Thiago Silva also voted for Neymar to finish first.
And for Mbappe, he also received his fair share of the top three votes. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Hugo Lloris and Jan Oblak gave the French forward votes to finish in the top three.
Expect the two PSG stars to once again be in contention for the award next year.
