Lionel Messi made headlines this week after his decision to take an unathorised trip to Saudi Arabia angered Paris Saint-Germain, as well as their fans.

The World Cup winner was subsequently handed a two-week suspension but has now released a video apologising for his actions.

“I thought we were going to have a day off after the [Lorient] game as always,” Messi said on Instagram.

“I had this trip organized and I couldn’t cancel it. I had already canceled it before.

“I apologize to my team-mates and I’m waiting for what the club wants to do with me.”

According to various outlets in France, the events have led to the club deciding not to renew Messi’s contract which expires this summer.

In a press conference on Friday, manager Christophe Galtier confirmed “there will be discussions with the entire club” and Messi regarding his future in the coming weeks.

The former Barcelona star has been heavily linked with a return to Spain or a record move to Saudi Arabia.
