Just when you think Lionel Messi’s done it all, he goes and breaks another record - this time slipping ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo in the all-time non-penalty goals chart.
The Argentine reached 764 non-penalty goals, edging past Ronaldo’s tally of 763 and he’s done it in 167 fewer matches.
Currently playing for Inter Miami, Messi hit the milestone over the weekend, bagging a brace in their 5-1 hammering of the New York Red Bulls.
After going 1-0 down early on, Messi set up Jordi Alba for the equaliser and then banged in two of his own in the second half, turning the game on its head.
The two goals brought his overall career total to 874, with only 110 of those coming from the penalty spot.
Though Ronaldo still holds a slight edge in total goals scored, Messi now sits alone at the top when penalties are taken out of the equation.
Saturday’s game saw Messi grab his sixth brace in his last seven matches, extending his lead as the MLS’s top scorer with 18 goals this season.
