FIFA’s The Best awards took place on Monday, where some of the game’s biggest stars picked up individual awards.
Here is who won The Best Player award in men’s and women’s football for 2022.
Last year’s winner Alexia Putellas claimed the honour after she captained Barcelona to a perfect league record and finished as the 2021/22 Women’s Champions League top scorer (11 goals).
An ACL injury in July stopped her season prematurely, and she continues to recover.
She beat the likes of Beth Mead (Arsenal/England) and Alex Morgan (San Diego Wave/USA) to the award.
Meanwhile, in the men’s game, Argentina captain Lionel Messi won the award after leading his nation to World Cup glory, where he scored seven goals.
He beat Karim Benzema (Real Madrid/France) and club team-mate Kylian Mbappé (PSG/France).
