Memphis Depay and Atlético Madrid are to set part ways after the player failed to cement his position as a regular member of the first team during his 18-month stay at the club.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Depay will leave in the summer despite initially agreeing to stay on for an additional year. However, the 30-year-old will now be free to begin negotiating with other clubs, as he looks to rebuild his reputation elsewhere.

The Dutchman becomes the latest player to be axed, as Atlético continue their drastic rebuild this summer. The club opted against activating the extension of his 18-month contract even though it was originally agreed that he would remain until the summer of 2025.

Barcelona retain a 50% sell-on clause on the forward, however they won’t receive any profit with the player now leaving on a free. Depay joined Atlético in January 2023 for around €3m and despite some promising displays, he was unable to get regular starting minutes, in large part due to injury.
