The visitors would have gone in front after just five minutes where it not for some brilliant goalkeeping by Gerónimo Rulli. Abde Ezzalzouli headed Memphis Depay’s corner towards the top corner, but the Villarreal goalkeeper somehow got across to claw it away.

Gavi then went close to scoring in the 10th minute, before Memphis missed a great chance when he only had the goalkeeper to beat.

Villarreal’s best chance of the first half fell to Arnaut Danjuma in the 39th minute, but he was denied by a decent save from Barça goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

Barça broke the deadlock early in the second half when Frenkie de Jong scored the rebound after a Memphis effort was saved. The goal was originally ruled out for offside but after a VAR check it was allowed to stand.

Villarreal then missed a great chance to equalise when Manu Trigueros blazed over from near the penalty spot.

But moments later they did equalise and substitute Samuel Chukwueze was the scorer, prodding high into the net just 11 minutes after coming on.

There was to be late drama, however, as Memphis netted in the 88th minute after latching onto a poor header back to his goalkeeper by Villarreal’s Pervis Estupiñán.

And there was still time for Barça substitute Philippe Coutinho to make it 3-1 from the penalty spot after he had been brought down by Juan Foyth.

That result leaves Xavi’s side 7th in the table, while Villarreal are 12th.
