Meltdown at Parkhead as Rangers man faces exile

As so many Rangers fans have been at pains to point out, Celtic fans’ response to Kyle Lafferty’s indiscretion is not only utter brass neckery, with Parkhead’s finest happily using the same terms about themselves, but the hypocrisy over their disgraceful abuse of the Queen resonates even worse.

To sum it up, thousands of Celtic fans are allowed to display offensive banners for the world to see, about Her Majesty, with no repercussions whatsoever, but a footballer cannot say something discreetly on the pitch without his losing his international career?

It’s almost like it’s because it’s a Rangers man saying something against Celtic fans – that just cannot be tolerated.

Whereas Celtic fans en masse giving the Queen disgusting abuse in public, on TV, witnessed by millions around the world is absolutely fine?

The utter shamelessness of these fans is completely staggering, and if it wasn’t so dangerous it would be laughable.

This is close to Orwellian 1984’s Thought Police, where you’re not allowed to even think something the government doesn’t like, in this case, the pro-Celtic Republicanism, and Lafferty is the one paying.

Let’s be clear, we are never condoning what he said any more than we condemn what Celtic fans did – but the reaction to Lafferty is clearly uneven with what was meted out for Celtic.

AKA a massive reaction to a small thing and consequences, compared with a massive reaction to a big thing and absolutely no consequences.

Still, it’s the way things are these days.
