Denver Hume is set to be confirmed as a Portsmouth player after the south coast club agreed a fee with League One rivals for the left-back’s services.

And per Football Insider, the 23-year-old is now undergoing a medical as he looks to finalise his switch to Fratton Park imminently.

Hume has been with the Black Cats since the age of 10, progressing through their academy system before signing professional terms in 2016.

He debuted as a 19-year-old for the first-team on the final day of the 2017-18 Championship campaign but it was the 2019-20 season where Hume finally became a regular in the Sunderland line-up, featuring 38 times in all competitions.

2020-21 though was blighted by injury for a long spell and instead of committing to his club, Hume rejected numerous contract offers over the summer to extend his stay at the Stadium of Light – however a breakthrough was finally reached in August.

Having played just four times in League One this season though, Hume is departing his boyhood club in search of regular game-time under Danny Cowley.

The Verdict

It will have been a tough decision for Hume to depart the club he’s ben at since he was a child, but he needs to further his career somehow.

And with Dennis Cirkin ahead of him in the pecking order at the Stadium of Light, Hume needed to think what was the right decision for him permanently.

It does seem as though the months of contract negotiations between Hume and Sunderland were now pretty much for no reason, but they have at least got a fee for the left-back.

Providing no issues arise in the medical then this is done – however with his hamstring injuries last season you have to wonder if something may come up.
