Maksym Taloverov is set to sign for Plymouth from LASK, with the defender set for a medical on Tuesday.
Plymouth Argyle are closing in on the signing of LASK centre-back Maksym Taloverov after the two clubs agreed a fee of around £1.7m.
New Plymouth boss Miron Muslic has been keen to strengthen the squad ahead of the deadline, with the 5-0 thrashing at home to Burnley highlighting the desperate need for defensive reinforcements.
The Championship strugglers had hoped to seal a deal for Sparta Rotterdam’s Mike Eerdhuijzen, but he was reluctant to move to Home Park due to their struggles.
Therefore, the club have had to quickly look for alternatives, and it appears they are now set to sign a new centre-back, as Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has revealed that Taloverov is poised to join.
He confirms that the two clubs have agreed a fee of £1.7m, with the player now set to travel to the UK for a medical, which is scheduled to take place tomorrow, and then the deal will be finalised.
It’s also reported that the 24-year-old has agreed terms on a three-and-a-half year contract that will keep him at Argyle until the summer of 2028.
Obviously, you can’t put too much pressure on Taloverov, and some patience is required with the player, as he is moving to a new league and country midway through the season, so he will need time to adapt.
But, on paper, he looks as though he is an upgrade on what Plymouth have, and this could turn out to be a shrewd bit of business by Argyle.
Standing at 6ft 5, he should have the physical qualities to cope with the Championship, and the fact Taloverov has won seven caps for Ukraine suggests he is rated highly in his own country.
As well as that, he has turned out for Slavia Prague in the Czech top-flight and now with LASK, who have competed in the Europa Conference League this season, even if things haven’t gone to plan for the club in that competition or domestically in Austria.
So, he arrives with decent experience for his age, and there is still room for him to improve and to develop his game under the guidance of Muslic.
Given their predicament, Plymouth will be hoping Taloverov can hit the ground running, as they look to pull off what would be an unlikely escape from relegation.
The dramatic draw at Sunderland thanks to a stoppage time equaliser does bring hope for Plymouth though, and it shows the players are fighting for the badge and the manager.
