Southampton are set to sign David Brooks on loan from Bournemouth for the rest of the season as Russell Martin looks to improve his squad for the promotion run-in.

Southampton to sign David Brooks

The Welsh international has endured a tough campaign so far, as he has failed to establish himself as a regular under Andoni Iraola, with Brooks making just 13 Premier League appearances, many of which have been from the bench.

Therefore, a loan move has been suggested in the January window, and Southampton having been linked with the player.

And, it’s Saints who have won the race for Brooks, as journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that he is poised to have a medical tomorrow before the move is finalised.

"EXCL: Southampton have agreed loan deal to sign David Brooks from Bournemouth. Understand medical tests have been booked on Tuesday for 26 year old winger."

David Brooks can star in the Championship

Anyone who saw Brooks play for the Cherries against Swansea City in the FA Cup on Thursday night will have been impressed, as he scored once and registered two assists in what was an outstanding team display.

This was Brooks at his best, as he showed his pace and direct style to terrorise the Swans, whilst he added end product and displayed composure when it mattered in the final third.

Ultimately, Iraola has a lot of talent at his disposal, which means Brooks isn’t getting the game time he wanted, with reports stating that has pushed for a move this window.

So, it’s not a case of Southampton bringing in a player who is struggling, he just simply needs a platform to perform week in, week out, which should be the case at St. Mary’s Stadium.

Martin will be getting a player who is ideally suited to the way he wants to play football, as he is technically assured, and he should be the perfect fit down the right flank.

Southampton won’t have an option to buy

It has been reported that this will be a straight loan move, so Southampton won’t have an obligation or an option to buy as part of the agreement that has brought Brooks to the club.

Yet, that doesn’t mean a summer transfer can be ruled out, because, as mentioned, Brooks is not a key figure at the Vitality Stadium, so he would surely be open to a move if that doesn’t change.

Of course, a lot could depend on whether Saints win promotion, both from a financial and football perspective.

Now though, the only focus is on the rest of the season, and Brooks, who is under contract with Bournemouth until the summer of 2026, will be hoping to play a key role in helping Southampton back to the Premier League.
