Media sources claim it’ll only cost Rangers £700K to fire Clement

We will, admittedly, take this one with a massive pinch of salt given it seems to have originated first on PLZ Soccer and Peter Martin, then ex-Hibs and Rangers-hating Tam McManus, before being regurgitated happily by some extremely unreliable ‘Rangers’ media sources (we use that term loosely), so take it how you like it, buuuut….

Martin and one or two other media types have made a claim that Rangers will not have any issue sacking Philippe Clement because instead of having to pay off his entire four-year deal, the termination clause only gives the Belgian 6 months up front.

Now, how a Celtic-minded ‘journalist’ or former Hibs player-turned-clickbait-pundit would actually know this is beyond us, and it strikes us as absolute fantasy that even the rest of the media are rather poo-pooing, but if ex-Chairman John Bennett in fact did have the foresight to protect the club in this way then we’d have to heartily congratulate him.

The theory goes that Clement’s wage was increased, along with the terms of his deal, but that if performances deteriorated badly, the club would be allowed to fire him and only pay him off half a year in a lump sum.

We’re not entirely sure that Clement himself would agree to this, given the security he had in his previous contract with the club taking him up to 2027, and which surely would have seen a full pay off in the event of sacking.

Why would he agree to a new deal which gives him a lot less insurance if the club was to relieve him of his duties? We can only imagine that it was due to a significant wage increase, if there’s even a crumb of truth in any of this because 6 months is circa £700,000, which isn’t gigantic in the grand scheme of things.

Bu no, we do believe that while the board is closer than ever to pulling the plug on Clement and his time in Govan, it will cost a lot of money to do it.

As we have said, the most palatable outcome for everyone involved would be mutual consent, in which case all parties agree that Clement’s time is done, and he graciously shakes his hand on a reduced settlement to compensate him for early departure. Maybe around £3M, rather than the full £6M, give or take.

But the idea that he’d accept 6 months and that’s that, seems, to us, a really nonsense theory.

But then, isn’t everything out of Ibrox a lot of nonsense these days?!
