Frank McAvennie is unsure over Bongani Zungu but insisted Rangers have four genuine stars at the club.

The former Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested that the Gers may have to move on from Zungu upon the expiry of his loan deal.

The South African international joined Rangers on loan during the summer from Ligue 2 side Amiens and had to wait for his debut as he was forced to quarantine upon his arrival in Scotland.

The 28-year-old was only handed his first Scottish Premiership start last weekend as the Gers laboured to a shock 1-1 draw against Hamilton Academical with Zungu substituted off on the hour mark.

Zungu only has 15 Rangers appearances in all competitions to his name as he faces very strong competition from the midfielders who were already at Ibrox when he arrived.

McAvennie believes that the January deadline-day addition of Scott Wright from Aberdeen has also knocked Zungu down the pecking order.

“They’ve got an abundance of players in midfield, Steven Gerrard has a lot of players in there”, McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“Unless you’re top quality you’re not going to get in ahead of [Steven] Davis, [Joe] Aribo, [Ryan] Jack, [Ryan] Kent, they’ve got big names in there.

“They’re going to get a game before anyone and the boy Wright is coming in now as well, there are some really good players in there.

“Sometimes if it doesn’t work you’ve got to stamp your authority. If it doesn’t work you move on.”

There is still time for Zungu to have an impact at Ibrox before his loan move expires in the summer.

Rangers face Kilmarnock on Saturday as they look to improve on last weekend’s surprise draw against Hamilton.
